Avtar Kishan Hangal, popularly known as A.K. Hangal, was an Indian actor whose career spanned over five decades. He was born on February 1, 1914, in Sialkot (now in Pakistan), Hangal’s cinematic journey is a testament to his enduring passion for acting and his indelible mark on the Indian film industry.

He appeared in around 225 Hindi films in a career spanning from 1966 to 2005.

His most notable roles are as Ram Shastri in Aaina (1977), as the Inder Sen in Shaukeen (1982), as Bipinlal Pandey in Namak Haraam (1973), as Imaam Saa’b in Sholay (1975), as Anokhelal in Manzil (1979) and the antagonist in Prem Bandhan and the 16 films he worked with Rajesh Khanna.

Iconic Roles and Collaborations:

A.K. Hangal’s versatility as an actor was evident in his ability to seamlessly transition between genres. He became the go-to actor for roles that demanded wisdom and gravitas. His collaboration with director Ramesh Sippy in the cult classic “Sholay” (1975), where he portrayed the character of Rahim Chacha, remains one of his most iconic roles.

Later he joined Communist Party of India’s theatre organization IPTA and was actively involved in various social causes. His commitment to social justice and his outspoken nature added depth to his public persona.

His important roles in the films such as Heer Raanjha, Namak Haraam, Shaukeen, Sholay, Aaina, Avtaar, Arjun, Aandhi, Tapasya, Kora Kagaz, Bawarchi, Chhupa Rustam, Chitchor, Balika Badhu, Guddi and Naram Garam are considered to be among his best work. He worked as a character actor of 16 films with Rajesh Khanna like Aap Ki Kasam, Amar Deep, Naukri, Prem Bandhan, Thodisi Bewafaii, Phir Wohi Raat, Kudrat, Aaj Ka M.L.A. Ram Avtar, Bewafai until Sautela Bhai in 1996. Later years he appeared in Tere Mere Sapne (1997) and Shararat (2002).

As he aged, A.K. Hangal continued to contribute to the film industry, taking on roles that showcased his wisdom and experience. His last notable appearance was in the film “Lagaan” (2001).
