Vidya Sinha started her career as a model before making her foray into acting. Vidya was born to a film producer Rana Pratap Singh’s home. She completed her education in Mumbai. Her journey into the world of entertainment began when she won the Miss Bombay title at the age of 18. 1- Film Debut
Vidya Sinha made her film debut with the film Raja Kaka (1974) opposite Kiran Kumar. She got fame with her mentor Basu Chatterjee-directed film “Rajnigandha” in 1974. The film, a simple yet heartwarming tale, showcased Vidya’s natural acting skills, earning her widespread acclaim. Her portrayal of a woman torn between two men was appreciated for its subtlety and realism.
2- Film Rajnigandha’s success
Following the success of “Rajnigandha,” Vidya Sinha continued to deliver notable performances in a series of films. One of her most memorable roles was in the film “Chhoti Si Baat” (1976), another collaboration with Basu Chatterjee. The film, a romantic comedy, became a box office hit, and Vidya’s chemistry with co-star Amol Palekar was widely appreciated.
3- Career Highlight
Vidya also starred in films like Chhoti Si Baat (1975), Karm (1977), Mukti (1977), Inkaar (1977), Kitab (1977), Pati, Patni Aur Who (1978), Saboot (1979) and Meera (1979) showcasing her versatility as an actress. She was known for choosing roles that resonated with the audience and depicted the everyday struggles and joys of life. She appeared around 30 films over a period of 10 years. She worked in Raj Sippy’s directed film Josh, where she played a negative role. Same year she played Vijeta Pandit’s mother in the film Love Story.
After a few years break in Australia she returned to India and started acting in films and TV serials. Salma Khan starrer film Bodyguard (2011) was her last film.
4- Vidya Sinha’s Television Career:
In addition to her successful film career, Vidya Sinha ventured into television during the 2000s. She played the lead role in the popular TV series Bahu Rani (2000), Hum Do Hian Na, Bhabhi and Kkyanjali (2004). Her transition to the small screen showcased her adaptability and further solidified her status as a versatile performer.
5- Personal Life:
Vidya Sinha’s personal life faced its share of challenges. She was married twice, first to Venkateshwaran Iyer in 1968 and adopted a daughter named Jhanvi. She spent her few years in taking care of her ailing husband and daughter, who eventually died in 1966. After the demise of her husband and daughter she shifted to Sydney, where she met the elderly doctor Netaji Bhimrao Salunkhe and they married. She filed a complaint against her husband for domestic abuse. Later they parted away. Despite facing health issues and personal setbacks, Vidya Sinha continued to pursue her passion for acting.
Vidya Sinha died on 15 August 2019 in a hospital of respiratory failure caused by heart and lund disease at the age of 71.
